Llangurig Cottages with Hot Tubs
Llangurig Guide
Llangurig, Powys' highest village, sits in the stunning upper Wye Valley. It's a perfect base for exploring mid-Wales with your own private hot tub to enjoy after days out.
The area offers excellent walking in the Cambrian Mountains and fishing in the River Wye. Nearby attractions include Hafren Forest (4.6/5 on TripAdvisor) and the Elan Valley (4.8/5), both within 20 minutes' drive.
Llangurig has an interesting claim to fame - it was the site of Wales' first hydroelectric power station in 1898. The village church of St Curig dates back to the 13th century and houses a rare giant's coffin.
Cottages range from cosy one-bedroom conversions to large farmhouses for groups. Many properties welcome dogs and offer enclosed gardens alongside those all-important hot tubs for evening stargazing in this Dark Sky area.

Sightseeing
Llangurig might be small but it punches well above its weight for sightseeing opportunities. The village sits at the foot of Plynlimon, where five major Welsh rivers begin, including the Wye and Severn. I recommend starting at St Curig's Church in the village centre - it's one of the oldest in Powys.
Just 15 minutes away is Hafren Forest (SY18 6JP, open daily, free entry), where you can walk to the source of the River Severn. The forest has several marked trails ranging from 1-8 miles. We love the 5-mile Severn Break its Neck trail with its spectacular waterfall (4.7/5 on TripAdvisor).
The Elan Valley (LD6 5HP) is a 20-minute drive and offers stunning reservoirs, Victorian dams and wildlife. The visitor centre opens 10am-5pm daily with free parking. Their guided tours score 4.8/5 on TripAdvisor. Don't miss the dam release days - check their website for dates.
For mountain bikers, Llangurig sits on the edge of the Trans Cambrian Way. You can hire bikes in nearby Rhayader at Clive Powell Mountain Bikes (LD6 5BU). The shop opens 9am-5pm weekdays and 9am-4pm weekends.
Pet Friendly
Llangurig is brilliant for dogs. Most local walks welcome well-behaved pets, including Hafren Forest which has plenty of streams for dogs to splash in. The forest paths are well-maintained so you won't need to worry about muddy paws before heading back to your hot tub cottage.
The Blue Bell Inn in the village (SY18 6SG) welcomes dogs in the bar area and even offers water bowls and treats. They're open 12pm-11pm daily and serve good pub food. We've found their Sunday roasts particularly good after a morning hike.
For supplies, the Spar in nearby Rhayader (LD6 5AB, open 7am-10pm) stocks pet essentials. The local vet, Wye Valley Vets (LD6 5HP), is just 15 minutes away in Rhayader and offers emergency services.
My top tip: bring towels specifically for your dog - the River Wye runs through the village and most dogs can't resist a paddle! Also pack a torch for evening walks as there's minimal street lighting.
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Llangurig
The Wye Valley Walk passes right through Llangurig, offering some of Wales' most beautiful riverside walking. The section from Llangurig to Rhayader is 10 miles of relatively flat terrain following the young River Wye. You'll spot kingfishers, dippers and if you're lucky, otters. The path is well-marked with yellow arrows and the route is accessible year-round, though can be muddy after rain.
Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding Station (LD6 5BL) is 15 minutes from Llangurig. They feed wild red kites daily at 2pm winter and 3pm summer (£8 adults, £4 children). The spectacle of 400+ kites swooping for food scores 4.9/5 on TripAdvisor. Visitor Jenny wrote: "Absolutely breathtaking - the sky filled with these magnificent birds. Worth every penny." They have hides for photographers and a decent café.
Llyn Clywedog Reservoir (SY18 6NL) sits just north of Llangurig. This man-made lake has a 236ft dam (Britain's tallest concrete dam) with viewing areas that provide spectacular photos. The 6-mile drive around the lake offers multiple stopping points. Fishing permits are available from the Clywedog Sailing Club (£15 day ticket) for brown trout. The reservoir scored 4.7/5 on TripAdvisor with visitors praising the "jaw-dropping views" and "peaceful atmosphere" - perfect before returning to your hot tub!
Is Llangurig suitable for families with young children?
Yes, though it's more suited to active families. The village has a playground and nearby attractions like King Arthur's Labyrinth (30 mins away) and the Elan Valley dams appeal to kids. Many cottages offer games and DVDs for rainy days and children love watching the stars from the hot tub!
Where's the nearest supermarket to Llangurig?
The village has a small shop for basics. For proper shopping, Rhayader (15 mins) has a Spar and local butcher. Llanidloes (10 mins) has a Co-op. For major supermarkets, you'll need to go to Newtown (30 mins) which has Tesco, Morrisons and Lidl.
Can I get around without a car?
It's challenging. There's a limited bus service (T12) connecting Llangurig to Llanidloes and Rhayader, but services are infrequent. Taxis are available from Rhayader but need booking in advance. I strongly recommend bringing a car to make the most of the area.
What's the mobile signal like?
Patchy at best! EE offers the strongest coverage in the village itself. Many cottages provide WiFi, but it's worth downloading maps and information before arrival. The poor signal makes it perfect for a digital detox while enjoying your hot tub.
Are there any good restaurants nearby?
The Blue Bell Inn in Llangurig serves good pub food. For more options, try The Triangle Inn in Rhayader (15 mins) or The Red Lion in Llanidloes (10 mins). For fine dining, The Checkers in Montgomery (40 mins) is excellent. Book ahead, especially in summer.
What's the best time to visit Llangurig?
Spring and autumn are ideal - fewer tourists but still good weather. Summer brings longer days for activities, while winter offers crisp walks and stargazing from your hot tub. The Elan Valley is spectacular after heavy rain when water cascades over the dams.
